How to Maintain Your Coffee Roaster

Simple, regular maintenance keeps a roaster safe, consistent and running for years. Here is the routine.

A coffee roaster is a workhorse, but it rewards a little routine care. Most roaster problems are not dramatic failures, they are the slow drift caused by chaff buildup, dull readings and skipped checks. A short, regular routine prevents almost all of it.

Daily

  • Empty the chaff collector. Chaff is flammable and the most common cause of roaster fires.
  • Wipe the cooling tray and clear the cooling holes so airflow stays strong.
  • Glance at the gas line and connections for anything loose.

Weekly

Brush out the drum area and the exhaust path where chaff and oils gather. Check that your temperature probe reads true, because a drifting probe quietly changes every roast you log. Clean the glass and trier so you can actually see and smell the beans.

Monthly and beyond

Inspect drive belts and motor mounts for wear, and look over the burner and the safety valve. Kafgar roasters use a novasit gas breaker valve that shuts gas off on a pressure fault or at target temperature, but it still deserves a periodic check. Service the bearings and seals on the schedule in your manual.

Keep records

Note what you cleaned and when. A simple log turns guesswork into a plan and makes it obvious when a part is due. It also keeps roast consistency honest, because you can tie any change in the cup to a real cause.
